September 2007—MasterControl from Alesis (www.alesis.com) combines a control surface and FireWire interfacing with MIDI I/O, two XLR mic inputs, six line ins and 18 digital inputs (Lightpipe and S/PDIF at 44.1/48 kHz, or up to 10 ins at 88.2/96/192 kHz). The unit has eight channel strips (with solo, record-enable, Mute/Select buttons and motorized faders), a jog/shuttle wheel, dedicated transport controls and cue mix section with talkback mic. The monitoring section has six analog outs configurable as discrete 5.1 surround or three separate stereo outputs. Bundled with Cubase LE software but compatible with most popular DAW software, MasterControl was slated to begin shipping last month at a retail of $1,099.

November 2004—This line of compact analog mixers provides 16-bit stereo simultaneous inputs and outputs over USB. Models 8USB and 12USB have four high-gain mic/lines; the 16USB has eight high-gain mic/line (XLR and 1⁄4-inch balanced) inputs with phantom power, two stereo balanced 1⁄4-inch line inputs, aux send (can send to onboard or external effects) and a stereo aux return. All feature 100 onboard digital effects and 3-band EQ per channel with high/low shelving and mid-band pass/reject. No drivers required: plug-and-play operation under Windows and Mac OS.

November 2003—The 16FXD from Alesis is a 16-channel, 4-bus analog mixer with built-in digital effects and S/PDIF output (44.1 kHz/16-bit). The unit features eight mic/line inputs and four stereo line inputs on balanced TRS connectors. The preamps offer switchable 75Hz highpass filters, phantom power and up to 50 dB of gain. Each I/O includes a 60mm fader, 3-band EQ and two aux sends: one fixed and one settable to pre- or post-fader. The master section features stereo LED meters, 2-track send and return, and a separate control room level control. The digital effects section offers 100 28-bit effects, including reverbs, delays, chorus, flanging, pitch and multi-effects. Price: $499.

October 2003—This 12-channel analog mixer in a compact three-rackspace design features eight XLR mic inputs with phantom power; two aux sends (pre- and post-fader) for monitor returns and effects; insert points on eight channels, plus two channels of stereo line inputs; 2-band shelving EQ at 12 kHz and 80 Hz; 60mm linear faders on each channel; and a front panel headphone jack.
