TASCAM DM-4800
September 2007—The Tascam (www.tascam.com) DM-4800 64-channel digital console has 24 buses, 12 auxes and 24 studio-grade preamps (more can be added via expansion cards), and can be completely repatched at the flick of a switch. Additionally, the DM-4800 offers extensive DAW control and two TC Electronic reverbs. A fat channel strip in the center of the console gives instant access to 4-band parametric EQ, dynamics and aux controls available for the first 48 channels. Its remote layer provides transport keys and 24 faders for controlling workstations such as Pro Tools, Logic, SONAR, Digital Performer, Cubase and Nuendo, while the optional IF-FW/DMmkII interface card provides 32 channels to/from a computer at up to 96 kHz over a single FireWire cable. Other options include a full meter bridge and a surround monitoring card offering downmixing, bass management and level control for mixing in up to 6.1 surround.

TASCAM DM-3200
February 2005—Tascam packed 'em in with its DM-3200 48-channel pro digital console. Based on the simple ergonomics of the DM-24, the desk records at up to 96 kHz/24-bit, features 32 channel inputs, 16 return inputs, 16 output buses, eight aux buses, 4-band fully parametric EQ, dynamics on each of the 32 channels and moving fader automation. Up to 6.1 surround panning is available, and with the optional 24-channel FireWire interface card, the DM-3200 becomes a powerful all-in-one computer interface/control surface/full-function digital mixer.
TASCAM FW-1082 INTERFACE
February 2005—New from Tascam, the FW-1082 will turn heads twice: once for features and a second time for its $999 price. The FW-1082 features 10 inputs, including four balanced XLR mic inputs with phantom power, two MIDI I/Os and digital I/O (S/PDIF). The mixer has eight 60mm touch-sensitive moving faders and select/solo/mute buttons, along with a moving master fader. There is a headphone output with level control, assignable footswitch jack, four assignable encoders, transport controls and a jog/shuttle wheel. Bundled software includes Cubasis LE 96kHz/48-track recording software, GigaStudio 3 LE streaming sampler and Nomad Factory plug-in demos.

April 2004—Fully mapped control for any DAW that supports HUI or Mackie Control protocols. Features include 25 touch-sensitive 100mm moving faders, each with 10-bit resolution; Select, Solo and Mute keys; 24 encoders controlling pan, aux level or channel strip functions such as EQ and aux; LED ring displays around encoders display parameters or channel meters; Footswitch jack for punch-ins; fader bank switching and In/Out point buttons; assignable function keys can be set to autopunch, record arming, undo, etc.; solid-feeling transport controls; smooth jog/shuttle wheel; and joystick for surround panning.

June 2003—Offering a midprice solution to DAW control, Tascam's expandable FW-1884 Audio/MIDI Interface provides eight 100mm moving faders, one master fader and dedicated controls, as well as eight balanced XLR analog mic/line inputs, phantom power and inserts on every channel. Communicating at FireWire bandwidth, the FW uses 24-bit/96kHz ADCs and DACs for full 96kHz operation on all analog I/O channels with compatible DAW software. March 2000—The coolest USB item at NAMM was Tascam's US-428 Digital Audio Workstation controller ($599), a 24-bit hardware controller that interfaces with Windows- and Mac-based sequencing platforms via a USB port. This no-audio-card-required workstation/control surface features eight hardware faders, with jog wheel, transport, EQ and control functions. It supports 16- or 24-bit resolution and 44.1 and 48kHz sampling rates and has four analog and two S/PDIF ins, plus RCA and S/PDIF outs.
