RED TYPE A
January 2007—If versatility is in your studio game plan, you may want to check out the Type A tube mic from Red Microphones (www.redmic.com, $1,345). Type A comes with a single, hot-swappable, lollipop-style capsule; eight other available capsules are priced from $249 to $849. Capsule personalities range from cardioid, figure-8 and omni patterns to “bright” and smaller-diaphragm capsules. The “Robbie-reminiscent” power supply has an ECC88 vacuum tube and a soft-start feature to maximize tube life and minimize startup time. March 2005—Unveiled at Winter NAMM, the Red Type B is a discrete, solid-state Class-A mic featuring an interchangeable lollipop element. The $699 mic's bayonet top also accommodates capsules from Gefell or Blue's renowned bottle mic.
