March 2006—M-Audio (www.m-audio.com) stepped out of the usual low-price box, releasing the EX66 monitor ($699 each). The tall, slender, powered units feature analog or digital inputs, onboard DSP, titanium HF drivers and twin 6-inch woofers.
M-AUDIO STUDIOPHILE BX8A
August 2005—A new, enhanced version of M-Audio’s popular BX8 studio near-field, the Studiophile BX8a ($599/pair) offers improved driver materials and a new industrial design. New features include a silk-dome tweeter and a new 8-inch LF driver crafted from Kevlar. This bi-amplified design features 70 watts for lows, 60W for highs, mag shielding, individual volume controls and a rated 40-22k Hz frequency response. Dimensions are 12x10x15 inches; weight is 26.4 pounds each.

June 2005—M-Audio's BX5a is an active two-way design using a 5-inch LF driver with Kevlar cone and damped rubber surround mated to a 1-inch silk dome. Priced at $399/pair, the BX5as are bi-amplified (40W LF; 30W HF), magnetically shielded and feature XLR balanced and ¼-inch balanced/unbalanced inputs and a volume control. Response is rated at 56 to 22k Hz.

July 2004—M-Audio's affordable Studiophile Series of monitoring systems now offers to those aspiring to multichannel projects a new option via the LX4 Surround Sound System. By combining the previously available LX4 2.1 System ($349) and the LX4 5.1 Expander ($199), a complete 5.1 system is born. The LX4 Surround Sound System comprises five ported LX4 passive satellite monitors and the LX4 subwoofer, which houses the system's active crossover matrix. The subwoofer's 125W power amplifier handles the entire surround system: 60W is designated for the sub and 27W is allowed for each satellite. The subwoofer has an 8-inch woofer, and each satellite monitor contains a 4-inch polypropylene woofer and 1-inch Mylar tweeter.
M-AUDIO DX4 MONITORS
June 2004—M-Audio's Studiophile DX4 monitors feature a 4-inch polypropylene woofer and 1-inch mylar tweeter powered by an 18-watt amp. The mag-shielded DX4s have both RCA and 1⁄4-inch inputs and a mid-cut switch. The front panel carries a volume control and a 1/4-inch headphone jack that automatically mutes the speakers when headphones are inserted. Price: $199.95/pair.

December 2003—M-Audio's Studiophile LX4 2.1 System combines two passive satellites and a subwoofer containing an active crossover matrix and internal amplification for both the 2.1 and 5.1 systems. A Studiophile LX4 5.1 Expander package adds three more LX4 passive satellites that connect to the LX4 2.1 subwoofer to make a complete 5.1 system. The sub has an 8-inch woofer powered by 60 watts; the expanders have a 4-inch woofer and 1-inch mylar HF drivers powered by 27 watts to each satellite.

November 2002—The latest in M-Audio's Studiophile Series, the BX8 is a two-way near-field with a mag-shielded, 8-inch woofer and a swivel-mounted, 1-inch silk-dome tweeter. The BX8 is powered by 130W of bi-amplification. Frequency response is 37 to 20k Hz. Input is via balanced XLRs and TRS connectors. Dimensions are 15x10x12 inches (HxWxD); weight is 20 pounds. Price: $599.95 per pair. Similar to the BX8, M-Audio's SP-5B is a two-way, bi-amped design featuring mag shielding, a 5-inch polypropylene woofer and 3/4-inch, swivel-mounted silk-dome tweeter. Response is 48 to 22k Hz; the total amplifier power output is 75W. Dimensions are 10x6.5x8 inches (HxWxD); weight is 28 pounds per pair. November 2002—Offered to complement the BX8 and SP-5B, M-Audio's BX8 bass-reflex powered subwoofer has a single 8-inch polypropylene cone with a stereo bass-management system, which takes a stereo input and splits the signal at the user-defined crossover frequency (50 to 180 Hz), routing LF to the sub and HF to the mains. Frequency response is 30 to 180 Hz. Connections include two XLR and two TRS balanced inputs, two XLR balanced outs for the satellites and one XLR out to an additional sub. Controls include level, phase, subwoofer and satellite frequencies, and satellite highpass output bypass. Dimensions are 15.6x10.6x12 inches (HxWxD); weight is 36 pounds. Price: $499.95.

May 2002—Midiman/M-Audio's Studiophile SP-8B are bi-amped reference monitors featuring an 8-inch woofer and a swivel-mounted, 1-inch silk tweeter that allows users to adjust imaging. Additional features include Ferrofluid cooling and magnetic shielding. The SP-8B has an extended frequency response of 33-22k Hz. MSRP for the SP-8B is $599.95/pair. The optional SP-8B subwoofer has an 8-inch woofer driven by an onboard 120-watt amp and M-Audio's Stereo Bass Management System. The SP-8S is $499.95.

February 2002—M-Audio offers the Studiophile SP-5B, a bi-amped, powered compact monitor. Its 5.25-inch polypropylene cone woofer has a damped rubber surround, and the ported cabinet outputs frequencies as low as 30 Hz. A swivel-mounted, 3⁄4-inch, silk-dome tweeter allows adjustment for various loudspeaker-mounting positions. Both drivers are mag-shielded.
