ROLAND DS SERIES
June 2005—Roland's (www.rolandus.com) DS Series of bi-amplified monitors includes the DS-5, a 45W 5-inch two-way system ($229 each); the DS-7, a 60W 6.5-inch two-way system ($349 each); and the DS-8 (pictured), a 120W, 8-inch two-way system ($579 each). All models are shielded and provide XLR, coaxial and optical digital inputs in AES/EBU and S/PDIF formats that support 24-bit audio and sampling rates to 192 kHz. All feature an efficient heat sink power amplifier that's compatible with new IEC60065 safety standards, and the power switch is conveniently built into the front panel.

ROLAND DS-30A
December 2003—Roland's active near-field, the DS-30A, has a 5-inch LF driver and 1-inch HF driver that share 30 watts of amplification. These monitors feature 24-bit/96kHz digital inputs; the elimination of line hum makes the DS-30As' digital inputs desirable.

ROLAND DS-90
June 2000—Roland’s DS-90 24-bit digital reference monitor provides optical and coaxial digital inputs. The two-way bi-amplified monitor houses a 6.5-inch polypropylene cone woofer and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter in a bass-reflex enclosure. The DS-90 uses a 2.6kHz active fourth-order crossover. Powering the monitor is a 60W amplifier for the LF driver and a 30W amplifier for the HF driver. Controls include level, LF trim, HF trim, an analog/digital input select switch, a left/L&R/right-assign switch, a digital in (coaxial/optical) switch and a power switch. The DS-90 has both balanced and unbalanced analog inputs terminated in XLR and TRS connectors. MSRP: $595 each.
